CSL teams give back to the community
2008-07-29
Players from the North York Astros and TFC Academy along with Astros Head Coach Rafael Carbajal were out to support the city of Toronto’s Soccer Skills Development Day for Special Needs Campers at BMO Field on July 29. Omar Samuels, Alexandre Oran, and Jonathan Hurtis of the Astros and Erick Olazabal, Eros Olazabal, Adrian Pena, Max Marsh and Jarek Whiteman from the TFC Academy provided sports training through various coaching workshops that focused on basic soccer skills designed for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Some modified skills included kicking, dribbling, passing, and ball control, promoting both individual and teamwork abilities. It provided an exciting opportunity to not only get them involved with Special Olympics Ontario, but also participate in one of Canada’s most popular sports.
Fans of the CSL got a chance to take home autographed posters from their favorite players, who helped them strengthen their soccer abilities. The clubs thanked Perkins on Norfinch for providing gift packages, including delicious freshly baked cookies for all the campers and staff to enjoy throughout the day. Congratulations to the winning camper whose ballot was chosen to take home a signed soccer ball by the players of the North York Astros.
Alexandria Lane, the program coordinator at Special Olympics Toronto, was instrumental in the CSL clubs taking part, all of which which helped to build a strong foundation for athletes with special needs to continue to dream big.
